Technische Universität Berlin (TU Berlin) is one of Germany's leading technical universities, known for engineering, computer science, natural sciences and planning. Many websites advertise a "fully funded TU Berlin scholarship", but there is no single full scholarship from the university. What TU Berlin does offer is a big advantage: no tuition fees.
The smart plan: Get admitted to a free programme at TU Berlin, and win a DAAD or other external scholarship to cover your living costs.
No tuition fees
- TU Berlin charges no tuition fees for regular bachelor's, master's and PhD programmes, including for international students
- You only pay a semester contribution (it changes slightly each semester and includes a public transport ticket)
- Exception: continuing-education master's programmes charge fees
Funding options
1. DAAD scholarships (best option)
- Germany's largest scholarship provider for international students
- Many programmes must be applied for from your home country, often a year before you start
- Search the DAAD scholarship database for programmes open to your country and subject
2. Deutschlandstipendium: €300 a month
- For high-achieving students, including international students
- Funded jointly by private donors and the German government
- Apply through TU Berlin once you are admitted or enrolled
3. German foundation scholarships
- Germany's foundations for gifted students (for example Avicenna, Cusanuswerk, Friedrich Ebert, Heinrich Böll, Konrad Adenauer, Studienstiftung) fund some international master's and PhD students
- Based on grades, social commitment and personality; good German usually helps
- See our guide: Hanns Seidel Foundation Scholarships 2027
4. For students already at TU Berlin
- STIBET scholarships for international degree students (to promote equal opportunities)
- Elsa Neumann Scholarship for excellent doctoral candidates (funded by the state of Berlin)
- DAAD Prize for outstanding international students
Tips
- Apply for DAAD first. It's your best chance of real funding.
- Budget for living costs in Berlin, plus the semester contribution.
- Learning German increases your chances for foundation scholarships and part-time jobs.
