University of Stuttgart Scholarships 2027 for International Students
Updated 19 October 2026
The University of Stuttgart is one of Germany's leading technical universities, known for engineering, architecture, computer science and natural sciences. Many websites advertise a "fully funded University of Stuttgart scholarship", but there is no single full scholarship from the university for new international students. Here is what is actually available, and what studying there costs.
Bottom line: Plan to fund yourself, or win an external scholarship such as DAAD, before you go. Then use the university's options to top up.
What it costs
- Tuition (non-EU students): €1,500 per semester
- Semester fee: €184 per semester (paid by all students)
- Living costs: at least €992 a month, according to the university
- Some groups are exempt from tuition, for example students who finished school in Germany or recognised refugees
Scholarships you can apply for
1. Deutschlandstipendium: €300 a month
- Open to German and international degree students
- Awarded for strong grades plus at least one other quality, such as achievements, social commitment or personal circumstances
- The call is usually published in late December, and applications are open for about 10 days in mid-January
- Deutschlandstipendium at Stuttgart
2. DAAD scholarships
- The most important funder for international degree students in Germany
- Programmes depend on your country and subject. Many must be applied for from home, with deadlines earlier than Stuttgart's
- Note: DAAD scholarships do not cover Stuttgart's €1,500 tuition fee
3. German foundation scholarships
- Germany's foundations for gifted students offer scholarships to international master's and PhD students, based on grades, social commitment and personality
- Good German is usually expected
- Example: Hanns Seidel Foundation Scholarships 2027
Support once you are studying in Stuttgart
These are for enrolled international students, usually from the second or third semester, and are mostly based on need:
- DAAD STIBET Final Stage: for students near graduation (bachelor's from the 6th semester, master's from the 4th, PhD in the final 12 months). Typically €250–400 a month for 2–6 months.
- DAAD STIBET Commitment: for students active in the international community. Usually €250–300 a month.
- DAAD STIBET Equal Opportunities: for students facing extra challenges, such as disability, illness, parenthood or a refugee background.
- Beihilfe and the Bürkert emergency fund: short-term help in a financial emergency.
Application dates: 31 January, 30 June and 31 October (if funds remain). Contact the International Office first.
The International Office's own advice: "Do not rely on receiving an aid or scholarship!"
Tips
- Apply for DAAD or a home-country scholarship first; that is your best chance of real funding.
- Apply for the Deutschlandstipendium every January once you are admitted or enrolled.
- Learning German helps for foundation scholarships and part-time jobs.
