University of Westminster Sanctuary Scholarship for Asylum Seekers in the UK 2027

Updated 7 October 2026 Open

The University of Westminster in London offers Postgraduate Sanctuary Scholarships to help people who have been forced to leave their home countries continue their education in the UK. The scholarship pays full tuition fees for a master's degree plus £1,000 a month for living costs.

Important: this scholarship is only for people already living in the UK who are seeking asylum, or who have leave to remain as a result of an asylum application. You can't apply from outside the UK, and international students on a student visa aren't eligible.

What the scholarship covers

  • Full tuition fee waiver for a full-time master's course
  • £1,000 per month for living costs, for up to 12 months
  • Two scholarships are available for this round

Who can apply

You must:

  • Live in the UK
  • Hold one of these immigration statuses before you apply:
    • UK asylum seeker
    • Discretionary leave to remain as a result of an asylum application
    • Limited leave to remain as a result of an asylum application
  • Have an offer for a full-time master's course at the University of Westminster starting in January 2027
  • Not already hold a master's degree
  • Not be eligible for postgraduate loans from Student Finance

Postgraduate diplomas, professional qualifications (such as ACCA, CIMA or RIBA Part III) and conversion courses (such as the Graduate Diploma in Law) aren't covered.

Key date

Deadline: Monday 2 November 2026, 5:00 PM (UK time)

How to apply

  1. Apply for a full-time master's course at the University of Westminster that starts in January 2027, and get your offer.
  2. Download the Sanctuary Scholarship application form from the official scholarship page.
  3. Email the completed form with your evidence attached as PDF files, using the email address on the official page.

Evidence you'll need

The application form asks for proof of your immigration status. Check the current form for the exact list, but expect to provide:

  • A Home Office letter confirming your immigration status
  • Your Application Registration Card (for asylum seekers) or eVisa / residence permit details
  • Your passport, if you have one
  • Your offer letter from the University of Westminster

Tips

  • Get your course offer first. You can't receive the scholarship without an offer for a January 2027 course, and admissions take time.
  • Explain your story and goals clearly in the application: what you want to study and how it will help you rebuild your future.
  • Ask for help. Charities that support refugees and asylum seekers in the UK, such as the Refugee Council or Refugee Support Network, often help with university applications.

Know someone in the UK this could help? Please share it with them.
