Separate application required |
The $12,000 major scholarship is only for Canadian citizens and permanent residents, so international students can get up to $10,000 a year.
You can receive only one of McGill's central entrance scholarships. If you qualify for more than one, you get the highest. Some faculties also offer their own entrance awards.
Who can get it
- A first-time university student (you haven't started a degree before)
- Entering a full-time bachelor's programme at McGill
- Transfer, mature, part-time, diploma, exchange and visiting students are not eligible
- Major scholarships look first at academic achievement, then at leadership. McGill says leadership means more than simply taking part in extracurricular activities.
Deadlines (applicants from schools outside Canada)
- Apply for admission to McGill: 15 January 2027
- Submit the major entrance scholarship application: 21 January 2027
The scholarship application opens on 1 October in the Undergraduate Admissions Applicant Portal.
How to apply
- Apply for undergraduate admission to McGill before 15 January.
- Include all your grades, and send new results as soon as you get them. This is how you're considered for the one-year award.
- For a major scholarship, complete the separate scholarship application in the Applicant Portal soon after you apply, and before 21 January.
- Describe your leadership roles clearly: what you started, led or changed.

Important: not fully funded
These scholarships cover part of the cost of studying at McGill. International students also need to pay the rest of tuition, housing and living costs, and show proof of funds for a Canadian study permit.
Looking for full funding?
The Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program at McGill offers full scholarships (tuition, housing and a stipend) to young Africans with financial need. The Fall 2027 round is closed, and McGill says the next cycle will be announced in spring 2027. Follow our WhatsApp channel and we'll post it as soon as it opens.
Tips
- Leadership matters as much as grades for the major awards. Show real impact, like a project you led or a club you started.
- Apply early. Missing documents can cost you scholarship consideration.
- Be careful of websites asking for payment. McGill says to trust only information on mcgill.ca.
