EMMIR Erasmus Mundus Master in Migration and Intercultural Relations 2027

Updated 7 October 2026 Open

The European Master in Migration and Intercultural Relations (EMMIR) is a two-year Erasmus Mundus joint master's degree for students who want to understand migration, displacement and intercultural relations, and to research them. Applications for Edition 14 (2027–2029) are now open, and the programme begins on 1 September 2027 in Oldenburg, Germany.

Where you study

EMMIR is run by a group of eight universities across Europe, Africa and Asia, coordinated by the University of Oldenburg in Germany. The partner universities are in Germany, Norway, the Czech Republic, Slovenia, Ghana, Uganda, South Africa and India, so students learn about migration from several world regions, not only from a European point of view.

What the scholarship covers

Students selected for an Erasmus Mundus scholarship receive:

  • A monthly stipend of €1,400 for 24 months
  • No participation (tuition) fee
  • Health insurance
  • University registration and student service fees

Scholarship holders pay their own travel, visa and residence permit costs from the monthly stipend.

There are also places for self-funded students. Non-fee-paying self-funded students pay no participation fee but cover their own living costs, while fee-paying students pay €4,500 per semester.

Who can apply

Applicants need:

  • A first university degree (bachelor's or equivalent), with diploma and transcript
  • Proficiency in English, with documents to prove it
  • Some academic background related to migration studies, intercultural relations or empirical research methods, such as university modules, research papers or essays

Check the official website for the full entry requirements and accepted English tests before you apply.

Documents you'll need

Upload these as PDF files with your online application:

  • Valid passport copy
  • CV
  • Statement of purpose (one to two pages maximum)
  • First university degree certificate and transcript
  • English language proof
  • Any other relevant documents

Documents that aren't in English need an official English translation. If you're selected, you'll have 10 calendar days to send certified hard copies, so prepare certified copies of your degree and transcript early.

How to apply

  1. Register on EMMIR's online application system (eMundus) with your name and email.
  2. Fill in the application form in English and upload your documents.
  3. Submit before 20 December 2026 to be considered for a scholarship.
  4. Watch for a confirmation email after you submit.

Applying is free. Scholarships go to the applicants with the highest application scores, so the quality of your statement of purpose matters a lot.

Tips for a strong application

  • Keep your statement of purpose within two pages. Explain what migration issue you want to study, why it matters to you, and how EMMIR's mix of regions helps you study it.
  • Show your research interest. Mention any essays, projects or research you've done on migration, displacement, refugees, diaspora or intercultural relations.
  • Don't wait for December. Translations, certified copies and English test results all take time.
