DAAD EPOS Development-Related Postgraduate Scholarships (Germany)

Updated 4 October 2026

The German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) runs many scholarship programmes. One of the best known for international applicants is EPOS, which funds selected development-related postgraduate courses at German universities.

What it covers

DAAD scholarships typically include a monthly payment for living costs, health insurance, a travel allowance, and in some cases a study allowance and rent subsidy. Many EPOS courses are taught in English, and some include a German language course before the programme begins.

Who can apply

EPOS is aimed at professionals from developing countries. Common requirements include:

  • A bachelor's degree, usually completed no more than six years before applying
  • At least two years of relevant work experience after your degree
  • A strong academic record
  • English or German language skills, depending on the course

Each course sets its own extra requirements, so read its page carefully.

How to apply

Unlike many scholarships, you usually apply directly to the course, not to DAAD centrally. The university then selects candidates and nominates them for the scholarship. Use the DAAD website to find the list of EPOS courses and each one's deadline.

Documents you'll need

  • DAAD application form (from the course)
  • CV, often in Europass format
  • Motivation letter
  • Recent letters of reference
  • Proof of work experience
  • Degree certificates and transcripts
  • Language certificate

Tips

Your motivation letter should link your work experience, the course content and your future role at home. Show that you understand the course and explain exactly how you'll use what you learn.
