The Chinese Government Scholarship, managed by the China Scholarship Council (CSC), is one of the largest fully funded scholarships in the world. Every year it brings thousands of international students to China for bachelor's, master's and PhD degrees, as well as Chinese language and research programmes.

Below is a reference list of 306 Chinese universities that admit international students under the CSC scholarship, with their English and Chinese names. Use it to find universities in your field, then check each university's international admissions page for its CSC agency number, programmes and deadline.

What the CSC scholarship covers

• Tuition fees, fully waived
• Free accommodation in a university dormitory, or a housing allowance
• Monthly stipend: CNY 2,500 for bachelor's, CNY 3,000 for master's and CNY 3,500 for PhD students
• Comprehensive medical insurance

Who can apply

The scholarship is open to non-Chinese citizens of all nationalities who are in good health. The usual age limits are:

• Bachelor's: high school certificate, under 25
• Master's: bachelor's degree, under 35
• PhD: master's degree, under 40

Many programmes are taught in English. Others are taught in Chinese and may require HSK results or a preparatory year of Chinese.

Two ways to apply

Type A: through the Chinese embassy in your country

You apply to the Chinese embassy or consulate (or your country's scholarship board) in your home country. The embassy nominates candidates to the CSC. Deadlines are usually between January and April.

Type B: directly to a Chinese university

You apply to one of the universities on this list, which nominates you to the CSC. Each university has its own agency number and deadline, and many open their calls from November or December. Some universities ask you to get a pre-admission letter from a professor first, especially for master's and PhD research programmes.

Both routes end with an online application on the CSC portal, campuschina.org.

How to apply

1. Choose a university and programme from the list below.
2. Visit the university's international student admissions page to find its agency number, programmes and deadline.
3. Prepare your documents (see below).
4. Contact a potential supervisor if the university recommends it, and ask for a pre-admission or acceptance letter.
5. Register and fill in the application on campuschina.org, entering the university's agency number.
6. Submit the university's own application form as well, if it has one.

• Highest degree certificate and academic transcripts (notarised copies, with English or Chinese translation)
• Study plan (bachelor's and master's) or research proposal (PhD), at least 800 words
• Two recommendation letters from professors or associate professors (master's and PhD)
• Foreigner Physical Examination Form
• Non-criminal record certificate
• English or Chinese language certificate (IELTS, TOEFL or HSK), if required
• Pre-admission letter, if you have one

Tips for a strong application

• Apply to more than one university. The CSC portal lets you choose up to three universities in a Type B application, so spread your chances.
• Contact supervisors early. For master's and PhD research programmes, a professor's acceptance letter can make a big difference.
• Write a focused study plan or research proposal. Show why China, why that university and how the programme fits your career.
• Apply early. Some universities close their CSC call as soon as they fill their quota.
• Check every year. Universities can join or leave the CSC programme, and the list of programmes changes yearly. Always confirm on the university's own website.
